So, you're thinking of joining SUMC? The club is one of the oldest and most established clubs in the University, and continues to go from strength to strength.
Each year, the club typically has over 100 members, a large proportion of whom are undergraduates at the University, but with an ever increasing number of postgraduates, staff and members of the community. Our members range from the absolute beginner to expert climbers or mountaineers.
The club is run each year by seven dedicated committee members who organise everything from trips to socials, equipment to safety.
Membership to the club costs £30 a year. A large proportion of this money is used to buy club equipment which all members are welcome to use as well as paying for affiliation to the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) - the representative body for mountain sports in Britian, and the provider of our Public Liability Insurance. The rest of the money is fed back into the club to be used for trips, socials or training.
If you'd like to join, you can download a membership form (19.3K) and fill it. Return this, along with a cheque for £30 made payable to SUMC to any committee member at one of our forthcoming events or place it in our tray in the AU Office, Level 1 of the Student's Union.
You don't need any specialist kit to join a trip, nor do you need to have climbed before. There are however a few essential personal items of clothing you will need but don't worry, if you don't have anything, its likely that somebody in the club will be able to lend it to you. If you're worried about this, you can contact us to discuss it.
